On the evening of the 25th Beijing timeMonstersofrockmegawaysCoal-fired power plants will be forced to install emission capture devices to reduce emissions or shut down, according to a regulation issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (Environmental Protection Agency,EPA) on Thursday.
The new restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel power plants are the latest effort by the Biden administration to reduce global warming pollution caused by the power sector. The power sector is the second largest contributor to climate change in the United States.
The Biden administration had previously promised to eliminate carbon pollution in the power sector by 2035MonstersofrockmegawaysEliminate a major part of carbon pollution in the entire economy by 2050.
The rule is one of four separate measures for coal and natural gas plants.
The EPA said the measures would provide "regulatory certainty" to the power industry and encourage them to invest to transition to a "clean energy economy". The rule also requires the power industry to reduce toxic waste water pollutants from coal-fired power plants and to safely manage coal ash in unlined storage pools.
Michael Reagan, the head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, said the new rules would reduce pollution and improve public health, while supporting the reliable long-term power supply needed by the United States.
